Featured Project: Whereisalex – Black Radio.
The “recovering undercover over-lover” from “nowhere, America,” whereisalex, is on top of the beat-making scene right now. It seems like everything he touches turns to gold – and this latest selection is no exception. On the heels of his massive remix of Hudson Mohawke’s ” Very First Breath,” the gospel-inspired artist has dropped a 7-track, heavily sample-based project in Black Radio.
From Beyoncé and Aaliyah to Snoop Dogg and Biggie, the project (which he refuses to call an EP)’s strength is in its versatility. In spite of its diversity, one recurring theme is consistent throughout: clean, crisp, toe-tapping and head-bobbing production. Whereisalex flows with ease, crafting wavy vibes on each track with a delightful confluence of classic instrumentation – brass, string, keys – synthesized melodies, and immaculate percs.
What’s most impressive and refreshing about this release is its innocuous and playful feeling. Many of the beats having been made in a single night, this was a project unveiled as a side thought – no fanfare or unnecessary complexity, just stripped-down artistry and musicality. In other words, whereisalex at his finest.
