Featured Song: Paper Lions – My Number (Ramzoid Remix).
Like most things in life, some of the most interesting music comes at the crossroads – the place where genres and musical paradigms combine to form something new and exciting. Ramzoid’s remix of Paper Lions’ – whose drummer was Ramzoid’s first ever drum teacher – “My Number” is a great example of an enjoyable mismatch.
Unmistakably Canadian, Paper Lions are well known for their well-arranged and catchy indie-pop sound. Though the original “My Number” is somewhat of a forray into a more electronic sound on its own, the concept is taken to an even deeper level in Ramzoid’s interpretation.
While small bits of “indie-ish” texture are ever present – high attack, single-coil guitar and and deep, picked bass – the song’s momentum is transformed in some really interesting ways. Where the original track’s verse is very much a groove, Ramzoid’s remix feels a little more laid back. Leading into the chorus, a heavy guitar transition is replaced with, essentially, a drop. It’s a far cry from the original vibe, but it’s executed flawlessly.
Think of this one as creative inspiration – definitely check out the rest of Ramzoid and Paper Lions’ tracks on SoundCloud and beyond – it’s always a privilege when two great artists can collaborate in such interesting ways.
