Featured Mixtape: Stew Stim – MAGENTA NOSTALGIA.
On the surface, producer Stew Stim is a beatmaker. Whether it be for rappers Eddy Baker or chillysosa, among others, Stew exhibits a fine body of production work. But underneath lies something more profound. When a collab between him and Blank Body surfaced a few months back, it gave listeners a taste of what this young producer could bring to the table. Since then, he has released a few collaborative singles and his first full-length project, the electrifying “MAGENTA NOSTALGIA,” a 28 minute experience that is as awesome as it is entrancing.
Stew is not alone in his style, but is every bit as innovative as his contemporaries. What sets “MAGENTA NOSTALGIA” apart from the rest is just how easily the album showcases the style that he – along with Blank Body, Glocque and a select few others – has seemingly created. Crunchy analog synths and droning, heavy bass lines highlight every track, but Stew adds his own twists and shifts to make for an utterly fresh experience.
The album begins with the intense “WEATHERBURN,” a song in which dark atmosphere meets ethereal melodies. A brooding bass line cuts in and out, creating an intense sense of tension and anxiety. As the track fades, the listener barely has time to comprehend what they have just signed up for before the crunching slaps of “ANNE” take over. Melodically, the track is stunning, boasting an impressive range of melodies which overlap and form a beautiful control room-esque soundscape. It’s a chilling combination of buzzing melodies and stark synth slaps that proves just how developed Stew’s style has become.
Techy, droning, and wild, the rest of the mixtape defines Stew Stim as an artist – one whose focus here is both to break genre barriers by showcasing something completely fresh, and to define his own unique sound. Whatever your musical preference, there is no doubt that “MAGENTA NOSTALGIA” is something else.
