The acclaimed Phuture guys are back with another one of their iconic collections. The Anxiety instalment – making up one third of “issue nine” – is charged with feelings of agitation, uncertainty, and restlessness.
As always, the tracklist has turned out to be chock-full of first-rate selections from the murky, underground SoundCloud beats music scene; it’s an exhibition of the positive musical energy that continues to fly under the radar in spite of the general saturation and mediocrity that so often seems to pervade beats music circles.
Among the 11 tracks on Anxiety, the one that, in my opinion, takes the throne is, hands down, “101%’.” This wacky effort from Unititld and william. is firmly at home with the rest of recent avant-garde experimental bass music, inspired by the likes of such forefathers as Mr. Carmack. This collaboration is as fresh as any, and even with its quirky, uncomfortable nature, it remains appropriate and awesome both for home listening and in a live setting.
